Spotlight for Melody Henderson

How long have you been cycling? As an adult, I’ve been riding for the past 6 years. But I remember when I was a young child, my older brother was big into cycling and used to drag me along with him on what seemed like ridiculously endless routes. I’m sure I grumbled the whole way. 🙂

What’s your favorite thing about riding? I notice so many little things around me that I otherwise never see.

How many miles a year do you typically ride? 2,500+.

Why did you join MVBC, and what have you enjoyed most? My friend Deb Sampson kept sharing great stories about her club rides—the places she’d ridden and all the great friends she’d made. I was used to riding alone and was nervous about riding with other people, but she reassured me and boy am I glad she did! So many fantastic experiences.

What is one future cycling goal you have? I’m currently working on cycling around all 11 Finger Lakes. So far I’ve completed 7. It’s been a great experience, often pushing me past my comfort zone. I’m itching to get back on the road this year to complete the rest.

What’s your favorite road to ride on? Any road with water views!

What is your favorite route*? My Greenhouse Brew route. The roads are quiet, the views are lovely, and I enjoy stopping halfway for a beverage at Greenhouse Brew in Sherrill. Unfortunately they were closed last year. I’m not sure if they’re reopening.

What’s the best advice you have for a new rider? Practice some basic bike maintenance and repair at home. You’ll be much more confident and less intimidated by the “What Ifs.”

*Melody’s favorite route: 34 miles.
